86th Academy Awards – Winners

The 85th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013.

It’s official! The dust is settling as the Oscar statuettes are on their way to their new homes. “12 Years a Slave” has been named this year’s victor, as it walked away with three awards including Best Picture, but a pyrrhic victory it surely was. Nobody would disagree that it was Alfonso Cuarón, who was the man of the hour, as he bagged 7 Oscars in total (in all technical categories, the score and best directing). Not a single head turned12_years_a_slave_featured1-618x400 towards “American Hustle” and where possible “The Great Gatsby” filled in. There were no surprises (at least for me) in the acting categories with McConaughey deservedly climbing to the very peak of pangalactic recognition.

I am quite content with how events unfolded and I managed to successfully predict 76% of this year’s winners, excluding the short categories. I still failed in the main category and I should have seen that one coming, especially with the historical tie in the PGA Awards this year that had suggested to me that history would repeat itself here a little. To my knowledge, it is the first instance, where the Best Director and Best Picture Awards ended up in 20131003_gravity_featurettethehumanexperiencedifferent hands two years in a row. There was no dispute that Cuarón would score in directing and my scientific background told me I shouldn’t acknowledge a trend based on one instance. I was also really surprised with the Documentary Award, as the universally acclaimed “The Act of Killing” was left empty-handed contrary to all odds; instead “20 Feet From Stardom” bagged that one. It only means I should be on the lookout for better predictors in some of the minor categories, but hey… you can’t have it all.
